Foundations of Caregiver Support

In 2015, IRM Research and Evaluation Inc, University nuhelot’įne thaiyots’į nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills, ALIGN Association of Community Services, and The Alberta Ministry of Children’s Services partnered to develop culturally appropriate training for foster parents and caregivers of Indigenous children.

The provincial Ministry of Children’s Services had acknowledged that many of the foster parents caring for Indigenous children were non-Indigenous and had little understanding of the beliefs and traditions of Indigenous communities. This project focused on enhancing parents understanding of Indigenous history, worldview, and parenting practices.

For more information on this project, see Chapter 2: miyawata Family Teachings on Turtle Island in our book “ohpikinâwasowin: Growing a Child”.
